Picture Window House
Rosehall Road, Shotts
2012

The brief for this extension to a 1980’s 1½ storey family home in Shotts, was for a new master bedroom, dressing room and ensuite on the first floor; and a larger open plan kitchen, dining room and family room on the ground floor. The final design for this project tries to maximise the impression of space within this extension by a completely open plan layout on the ground floor, with a double height space above the family room and also by the incorporation of a large glazed gable to the rear of the house, which gives the impression of the extension flowing out into the rear, private garden. This concept of breaking down the boundaries between the extension and the garden is further developed by the incorporation of large sliding glazed doors, which open from the family room onto a large elevated deck area, framed by built-in planters. The new large kitchen has been designed with a  centrally located breakfast island to encourage this area as the family hub of the home. A new private, feature, staircase from the family room to the master bedroom suite which has the benefit of large glazed panels on the western wall which allow for stunning views over the surrounding landscape.
