This loft and garage conversion to a 1970’s bungalow within the small town of Shotts was designed to provide additional living accommodation within this small family home. On the ground floor the outdated flat roof over the garage was replaced with a pitched roof and vaulted ceilings internally to maximise the impression of space. The conversion of the garage was designed to incorporate a large family room and open plan dining area, divided by fixed bow shelving. The existing garage doors were replaced with a set of floor to ceiling bifold doors and in addition to the South facing fixed glazing and large rooflights on this elevation, create a room which is flooded by natural light. A second set of bifold doors on the West facing façade also provides direct access to, and views of, the rear garden from the family room. Upstairs the existing loft has been converted to provide an additional master bedroom with large ensuite and dressing room in addition to a fourth family bedroom with ensuite. The master bedroom is designed with the king size bed located centrally against a feature glass block wall, between the bedroom and ensuite, with two circulation routes to either side of the bed to maximise useable space within an area which is limited by headroom. Two sets of double velux windows on both ceilings provide dual aspect views of the surrounding landscape while also maximising natural light.
